In order to compete with the professional attitude of the rest of the gymnastics world, Brian Stocks and Norman Wilkinson recognised that Liverpool would have to provide everything it would take if they were to produce top level gymnasts.
The pitted gym came first which provided a safe and permanent environment in which to train.
Thanks to Liverpool City Council and European investment, the club were then able to build the large gymnasium – which is still our home today – creating a perfect international training facility.
Following this came probably the most important link, the staff. The club attracted internationally renowned coaches – Delchev from Bulgaria and Ma Shu from China (who still provides support to the club) – who coached the boys to international success and Andrei Popov from Russia coaching the girls.
The club went from strength to strength gaining success and recognition within GB and beyond. Additional funding from Liverpool and UK Sport enabled the club and its facilities to become a Centre of Excellence with international recognition and a reputation to match – producing a steady stream of female gymnasts capable of taking on the best in the world and winning – firmly putting British gymnasts on the international map!
Since 1994 the club has regularly produced competitors, medallists and champions at the World Championships, European Championships, Commonwealth Games and the Olympic Games. Gymnasts from our club made up four out of the five team members in London 2012 with our very own Beth Tweddle securing a bronze medal on bars and Rebecca Tunney being the youngest member of Team GB!
The clubs success is undeniable and is a testament to the dedication and hard work of coaches and gymnasts, past and present, who have made the club what it is today – Home of Champions…….!
